The UN to train language professionals in Córdoba, Argentina

On February 10th, 2012, Mr. Shaaban M. Shaaban, Under-Secretary-General, Head of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) of the United Nations, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), in Córdoba, Argentina, to collaborate in the training of language professionals.

The DGACM initiated the Universities Outreach Program to raise awareness about opportunities for language professionals at the United Nations.  To that end, the program is committed to helping train professionals and to promoting cooperation between international organizations and training institutions.

In view of the overall vacancy rate at the DGACM and the projected retirement rate in the upcoming years, more than 300 new professionals will need to be recruited before 2016.  In order to address this issue, the DGACM, on behalf of the United Nations, signed Memoranda of Understanding with the leading universities around the world, to cooperate in preparing candidates for their examinations.

Founded in 1963, the UNC is the oldest university in Argentina and the first institution in Latin America—and the 20th in the world—to sign this agreement as part of the Language Outreach Program by the United Nations.

Conferences, workshops for students, and meetings with professors are already taking place to set this project in motion.

Congratulations to all of those who made this possible!
